MENC: The National Association for Music Education Announces Tri-M® Chapter of the Year Recognition Winners   RESTON, VA (August 9, 2007) — MENC: The National Association for Music Education proudly announces the results of the Tri-M® Chapter of the Year Recognition. The Tri-M® Music Honor Society rewards exceptional middle school and high school music students throughout the world. The Chapter of the Year Recognition was developed specifically to offer opportunities for recognizing outstanding Tri-M members and chapters. The Senior Division winner for the Chapter of the Year is Nazareth Academy, Tri-M Chapter #2096, Margaret Lafferty, advisor, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Nazareth’s Tri-M Chapter was chartered in 1990. They have previously received the first runner up title of Chapter of the Year Recognition in 2004, but this is their first time receiving the National recognition. Margaret Lafferty, chapter advisor had this to say about the title: “This is a reward for all of our chapter’s hard work. It’s nice to be recognized for our hard work. The first runner-up in the Senior Division is W.T. Clarke High School Tri-M Chapter #1768, located in Westbury, New York, and advised by Kevin Scully and Adrianna Donovan. The second runner-up is Villa Maria Academy, Tri-M Chapter #1227, located in Malvern, Pennslyvania and advised by Joyce Prichard. The Junior Division Chapter of the Year is Hubbard Middle School Tri-M Chapter #3085, located in Tyler, Texas and advised by Nancy Epperson. Conyers Middle School Chapter #5030, located in Conyers, Georgia and advised by Christine Bruns, is the first runner-up, followed by the second runner-up, Upper Township Middle School Tri-M Chapter #4881, located in Petersburg, New Jersey, advised by Angie Wyers. All active chapters of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and their members are eligible to participate in the Tri-M Music Honor Society’s Recognitions Program. The Chapter of the Year Summer Music Scholarship Recognitions Program is designed to motivate and reward chapters that develop active service projects, to encourage chapter officers to perform their duties properly, and to increase awareness of what other Tri-M chapters are doing. Summer music scholarships are awarded to members of the winning chapter and the two runner-ups in each division. The Senior and Junior Chapter of the Year also receive a permanent engraved service plaque. Tri-M currently has more than 42,000 members in more than 5,000 chartered chapters worldwide. The purpose of the Tri-M Music Honor Society is to inspire music participation, create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, and promote leadership in the music students of secondary schools.
