March is Music In Our Schools Month®!
NAfME and the Council for General Music Education expanded Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®) to start in October and continue into March! Learn about this new format. This 2022-2023 school year, the focus is on kindergarten and 2nd and 4th grade and features sheet music, lesson plans, and samples of informance programs where students can teach their parents and community members.
In March, NAfME members and students celebrate MIOSM – a special time to raise awareness of the importance of school music programs in communities and to community leaders with concerts, music activities, lessons, and advocacy.
NAfME invites all Collegiate chapters to get involved this March by holding their own Music In Our Schools Month celebration.
Here are several ideas to get you started –
- Invite local school musicians to participate in a “Side-by-side” ensemble concert, with school musicians performing alongside Collegiate musicians
- Offer a concert of a multi-generational ensemble in the community to show the long-lasting benefits of music education, with the 2023 MIOSM Concert Insert and MIOSM logos on promotional materials
- Music teacher appreciation awards event – invite all local schools to submit nominations, and ask local politicians/school board members to present awards
All Collegiate MIOSM projects can be submitted for consideration in the 2023 Collegiate Chapter of Excellence Award program!
Share photos of how music impacts you, your students, and your community on Instagram and Twitter using #MIOSM. Don’t forget to tag @NAfME!
