Carl B. Hancock is Professor of Music Education at the University of Alabama and his research is in journal bibliometrics, career trends, professional development, and teacher attrition. He is published in the Journal of Teacher Education, Journal of Research in Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Journal of Band Research, Arts in Education Policy Review, and Update: Applications of Research in Music Education. His other contributions include conducting the Alabama Music Teacher Census and writing for the second edition of the Grove Dictionary of American Music.
Dr. Hancock’s presentations include events at the American Educational Research Association National Conference, The Midwest Clinic, the CMS National Conference, the NAfME Music Research & Teacher Education National Conference, the Desert Skies Symposium on Research in Music Education, and the International Symposium on Research in Music Behavior. He regularly presents at state and regional music education conferences.
Carl is the immediate past-president of the Alabama Music Educators Association (AMEA) and served on the editorial board of the Journal of Research in Music Education. He was the national chair of the Learning and Development Special Research Interest Group and Affective Response Special Research Interest Group for the Society for Research in Music Education. Regionally, he represented music education on the southern board of the College Music Society and served as the research chair and collegiate advisor for the AMEA.
Carl received his Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education degree with a certificate in college teaching from Florida State University. His graduate work was with the University Bands and the Center for Music Research. He also received his Bachelor and Master of Music Education degrees from Florida State University.
Prior to Alabama, Hancock held positions at the University of Arizona. His career in secondary education began in Florida where he served as the marching band assistant at Leon High School, band and choir director at Santa Fe High School, band director at Sebastian River High School, and music supervisor for North Indian River County.
Dr. Hancock is a member of The National Association for Music Education, the Society for Research in Music Education, and the American Educational Research Association.
