Debbie Glaze (2016-2018 and 2018-2020)
Debbie Glaze is currently an Associate Professor of Music Education at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. She teaches choral methods and literature courses, childhood and introductory music education courses, and oversees graduate student teachers. At Portland State, she created and implemented the first Bachelor of Music Education degree and oversees a thriving and nationally recognized Kodály Levels Training each summer with a stellar faculty from throughout the United States and Hungary. She is Past President of the Northwest Division of NAfME, where she served on the National Executive Committee for two years. In her role as the NW President, she coordinated the first conference held in Bellevue, WA, and helped to implement the Northwest Region’s shift away from nationally run to locally run divisional conferences that we enjoy today. She is also Past President of the Oregon Music Educators Association. In 2012, she received the John McManus award for the state of Oregon, an award denoting “a lifetime of service to Music Education and in recognition of your highly distinguished professional accomplishments.”
Seventeen years of interest in the area of Brain Research applied to classroom general music and ensemble rehearsal has greatly enhanced her own teaching and rehearsal process and that of her students in what we now know are current and evolving best practices. In conjunction with her longtime mentor, Dr. Charlene Archibeque, she presented sessions on Brain Based-learning in the Choral Rehearsal at the 2015 ACDA National Conference in Salt Lake City and the National Collegiate Choral Organizational Conference in Portland .
She conducted high school choirs for over seventeen years in California and Oregon, and served as the choral conductor for four concert tours of Europe with the Oregon Ambassadors of Music Program. She then became the Music Supervisor of the Lake Oswego, Oregon schools, where she taught choir, general music, and beginning band, and supervised all district music activities and music faculty.
Debbie is active in the Northwest region as a clinician and adjudicator and serves as a music consultant for several school districts in the Portland Metro Area. She also maintains a large and active church music program, as she is the Director of Music Ministries at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Portland, Oregon.
She holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Colorado State University and an MMEd with emphasis in Choral Conducting from San Jose State University.
